Gaps Between Front Teeth

June 13th, 2012

There are many instances where natural gaps between front teeth are quite esthetically pleasing (think of Lauren Hutton) or individually characteristic (the British actor Terry Thomas).  There are other cases where these gaps may detract from proper facial harmony and esthetics, causing the individual to be ashamed of his or her smile.  These are the times when your dentist can come to the rescue.  We have several different techniques available to “close the gap” and create a different type of smile appearance, sometimes by simply diminishing the width of the gap or other times by eliminating it all together.  Depending on your individual situation, we can use porcelain crowns, full veneers (porcelain or composite plastic), or simple composite resin bonding.  Each procedure can achieve a very pleasant cosmetic result.

Tooth whitening may be recommended prior to the “gap closing” to enhance the esthetic result even further.  The whitening process is usually done at home, with significant improvement being seen within a week.  Then, if porcelain veneers or crowns are to be used for gap closure, several visits will be necessary to complete treatment.  If composite resin bonding is the treatment of choice, things can be taken care of in a single visit.  So, if you have a gap between your front teeth and you’re happy with your appearance, leave it alone.  However, if you want to “change your smile” by closing the gap, give your dentist a call.
