Dental Cleanings and Check-ups

April 27th, 2011

Most people have the common sense to realize that routine preventive maintenance is required for their homes and automobiles, but many do not comprehend the importance of this same type of  “routine maintenance”  for their mouths.  Too many individuals wait for an emergency situation to develop until they visit the dentist.  Tooth pain, fracture, or infection are oftentimes the initiation of a relationship with the dentist; yet many of these situations can be diagnosed and properly treated before “the emergency” develops if the patient follows a program of routine dental cleanings and check-ups.

After many years of experience involving a wide variety of patients, we usually recommend a six month recall program to most of the population.  A  thorough dental examination and cleaning should be performed every six months, with X-rays taken as needed at regular intervals.  These examinations include screening for oral cancer and other pathology or disease, evaluation of the teeth for decay and associated problems, evaluation of the general periodontal health, and other assessments of dental conditions and esthetic parameters. A comprehensive dental cleaning is also performed , along with a review of proper home care techniques.  Six month recall visits have proven to be very effective in maintaining optimal oral health.  Please see your dentist and dental hygienist on a regular basis, as “prevention is the best medicine.”
